Climbing Club - Year 9
Meeting 3.30-4.30pm each Thursday after school. See Mr Crouch for more details.
Noticed anything different about the climbing wall in the sports hall?
During the Easter holidays 2011 the wall was refurbished with some new ergonomic, resin holds. These have been arranged to create new, colour-coded climbing routes with a brand new “3D volume diamond” for a more adventurous climb!
Students did fantastically well...
Eight Year 9 students have already experienced the upgraded wall with a six session course run by a qualified instructor from Undercover Rock at St Werburghs in Bristol.
Mr Crouch, who supervised the sessions said “All the students did fantastically well and achieved their NICAS Level 1 qualification that lets them learn to climb further at any indoor climbing wall in the country.”
Check out the NICAS qualification syllabus here.
Falling
The students learned to climb both easy and difficult routes, how to use different belay devices (used to control the rope while climbing). They practiced falling from the wall (and being saved by the rope!) and they even practiced climbing up back to front!
More climbing courses
There are plans to run more climbing courses soon and use the climbing wall as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award for Year 10 students. Watch out for more information on the website or ask Mr Crouch for details.
Many thanks to the PTA for helping to fund the upgrade to the climbing wall.
