The Benefits of Engineering and Science College Status for our Students
- All of our teaching staff are trained specialists in Design and Technology, Maths, ICT and all three main science disciplines; Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- There is increased support for learning. The D&T department and the Science department have more dedicated technician hours. An additional ICT technician is funded through Specialist Schools.
- We have modern, high standard Engineering, Science and ICT facilities, workshops and laboratories are up-to-date and fitted with the equipment that students may use in their future careers.
- Every classroom in Engineering and Science now has an interactive whiteboard or a data projector.
- The students’ curriculum is enriched through educational visits to a variety of destinations such as the Science Museum, Bristol Zoo, Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust and we have visits from science and engineering experts working in the real world (A-Level) and outreach work in the local primary schools (D&T Roadshow).
- Students benefit from up-to-date curriculum choices including core GCSEs, additional GCSEs and Engineering Diploma Level 1 & 2 for entry 2010. Contribute to the delivery of Level 3 Diploma in Engineering in the Kingswood Partnership.
- Staff are members of the Design and Technology Association and the school hosts regional events for Specialist Schools and Academies Trust.
- Cross curricular links with other subjects.
- Our work with local primary schools that ensures new Year 7 students settle in more easily having met our staff and visited the school to use our facilities.
- Numerous enrichment activities are continually reviewed to provide optimum interest.
- Links with Partner Primary schools– Mangotsfield Primary, Emersons Green, Barley Close, The Tynings and Pucklechurch. The school hosts meetings with Headteachers and Subject Coordinators to help raise achievement in the specialist subject areas.
- Wider community links are well developed - students and parents are actively engaged in Engineering - GreenPower. Adult Literacy, Numeracy and ICT courses (delivered by South Gloucestershire) are hosted at Mangotsfield. Parenting courses are provided by our staff following referrals by South Gloucestershire.
