Situated in the Concorde Block, the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is staffed by a full-time librarian and contains over 10,000 books as well as a suite of 20 networked computers. Other facilities include a scanner and colour printer/copier.
Reading for Pleasure
As a member of the school students are automatically members of the LRC and are encouraged to use it’s facilities both for schoolwork and reading for pleasure.

Chess Every Day
 Chess is very popular in the LRC, with boards out every break and lunchtime for those who wish to play for fun. It’s a good way to meet people and make friends from years other than your own.
For those who wish to improve their game, there is a Chess Club held after school on Tuesdays. The teacher in charge is M. Deplechin. Other members of staff sometimes drop in for a game (and get beaten!).
World's Biggest Chess Competition
We have participated in the world’s biggest chess competition the ‘British Land UK Chess Challenge’ for the last 6 years.

Could you earn your LRC Passport?
Your LRC Passport will record your literary travels. All you have to do is read 5 books from different continents.
Reward Stamps
Choose your books from the travelling trunk in the LRC. These will earn you 40 reward stamps per book. You can then add to this by reading books of different genres; e.g. a science fiction, horror, romance or animal story, a biography, poetry book or other non-fiction book. All these different types of book will earn you additional stamps.
Each time you borrow a book you will also be given a log card which records the author, title and subject and which doubles as a book mark.

Concorde Book Award
Every year students from South Gloucestershire can nominate books to be shortlisted for the Concorde Book Award. To be eligible the book must be in paperback and have been published within the previous 18 months.
Favourite Book
Students then read the books on the shortlist - usually between 4 and 6 books. On World Book Day they vote for their favourite book. This years winner was ‘Knife’ by R.J.Anderson. Previous winners include ‘Private Peaceful’ by Michael Morpurgo and ‘Ways to Live Forever’ by Sally Nicholls.

UK Youth Parliament
Mangotsfield students have actively participated in the UK Youth Parliament elections over the past five years with several of our students standing as candidates and others taking part in canvassing and at the count.
UKYP elections are conducted in exactly the same way as a General Election, giving students an insight into the way our country is governed.

Year 7 Reading Group
Students in Years 7 and 8 can join a reading group in the LRC, where a book or books are chosen and discussed. Students can make their own recommendations for books to read.
 This year the shortlisted books for the Concorde Book Award were followed, with three students attending the awards ceremony, one of them giving a presentation on one of the shortlisted books.

BBC School Report Day
The LRC hosts the school's BBC School Report day. After researching, filming, interviewing and editing the whole programme the culmination is a news report, created entirely by the students.
They decide what is important in the news on that day, whether local, national or international events and then choose an aspect of the story which gives an individual perspective.
