Changes to the school uniform

Tim briefly gave up some figures on the results of the questionnaires, these included:

28% for blazers

34% were for the old school jumpers

38% were also for the new cardigans

40% said they would rather no uniform

45% would keep the maroon colour

47% agreed that they would want the colour black to be present on the new uniform

He also mentioned about either making the designs better or have more designs?

Battle of the bands

Postponed to a later date.

School Council Trip

This couldn't go ahead because is was a week before year 10 science exams. Because of this Jess is going to ring them to change the date to 29.06.11 and to also see if Miss Vincent is free for the date.

Change in canteen food!

The new canteen staff that have been hired by the school to change the menu came into our meeting and explained their plans to change the menu, to have fresh, homemade food everyday but still be healthy and enjoyable and they want students to look forward to lunch times which would be more ‘interesting’

Review of comic relief.

We managed to raise over £2300 for the event and Shannon, Jason, Calum, Jess and Luke managed to sell all of the red noses.

Sponsored Walk & Japan non-school uniform day?

The issue came up if the school council should organise a sponsored run for the event again as we did last year and it was a success .

Mr Badley suggested that the school should do something to raise money for Japan.  It was brought up that we have a non-school uniform day but Mr Wait brought up the issue about actually doing something to raise money, Jason suggested a raffle and prize will be donated to winning team.

Correspondence

The School Council has received a letter from the Willow Foundation saying thank you for the money we sent them from the sponsored walk.  Leukaemia research also sent a letter saying thank you for the thousands of pounds we’d sent them.

Visit from Julie Leary

Julie Leary spoke to the School Council about a youth council in Fromeside every two weeks, from 6.30 8.30. Those that go get a chance to discuss matters than bother you in the local area.

She asked for two people to do so; Sam and Tim volunteered.

Questionnaire for new uniform

Miss Plant and Mr Wait have helped with this matter; they have asked SLT for feedback.

The new uniform, if approved, would be for September 2012.

A year 7 suggested having pockets in the new uniform; we all agreed.

The new fence around the school

We all hate it.  It is there as the planning application for Taylor Wimpey Homes was declined.

Mr Wait thinks the fence is illegal as it’s blocking off public walkways.

Comic Relief

We have a non-uniform day coming up as we are all aware.  Sam is also taking a box of Red Noses into sixth form to try and raise more money.

Battle of the Bands

Lara, Mara and Nyasha (sp) came into the meeting to talk about Battle of the Bands; they want it to go ahead on 4rd of April with all the money raised to go towards World Challenge.

They say they already have some teachers to help them on the night.

Council Trip

Shannon and Jason phoned the race track and asked for prices; it’s £28.50 a person but they said if it’s more than 20 people it’ll only be £20 a person.

The school council would pay half of the money towards the trip.

School Council Meeting - Tuesday 1st February 2011

New Uniform

Tim told the Council that he asked 10 students about the new school uniform.  Mr Badley said that more students need to be asked about what they want.  The School Council would like to have the new uniform for September 2012.

The new fence on the planning application land

The new fence on the planning application land is to stop the public applying for village green status. The path beside the school is under threat even though a map from 1921 shows that path.

Comic relief

Jason said he will talk to Mr Wait about comic relief and about selling the red noses.

Report from school council committees

Not much has happened; the raffle is going on and we are using the money from council, Shannon has more information.

Battle of the bands

The hall is booked for Friday April 1st, there was a suggestion for an assembly on it. Callum told us between 15 and 20 staff can do it. Two bands have replied and a guest band is doing it.  It’s £3 a ticket for everyone.

School Council Meeting - Tuesday 11 January 2011

PTA Community Prize - Suggestions

Calypso put forward her brother Sam to be entered in for the PTA community Prize and the council agreed to this.

Changes to school uniform.

Miss Kinneir has still to put the logos onto the tops and Jess and Calum are going to be modelling them in assemblies and in front of the SLT members. Mr Badley came into our meeting and said our idea to change the uniform needs to be presented to SLT and the governors, and we need to get the whole school view on the uniform.

Travel Plan.

Mr Wait and some students went to a meeting and looked at where and how students crossed the roads near the school.

Comic Relief school council activities.

We decided to do a raffle in the end and let the prize be money. The council asked for more ideas.

Council Team building event

Shannon, Luke and Jason looked into Avonmouth Raceday. The cost of which would be around £20pp for a group of 20 people, thought of taking the school mini-bus and first 16 to pay would get a place.

Battle of the Bands.

Callum is going to do a cake sale to help raise the money for the event. It is set for the 1st April with the hall booked with staff supervising.

School Council Meeting - Tuesday 7 December 2010

Correspondance:

  1. The poppy appeal raised £139.37 for their charity.
  2. The Non Uniform day raised £1,111.37;  £1,000 for charity, the rest sponsorship (which is good!)
  3. Dan unfortunately had to resign from the school council as he found it difficult to commit because of his timetable and believed it was unfair to us for him not regularly meeting.

New Uniform:

Jess and Callum will be modelling the prototypes of the new uniform designs in assemblies soon to show pupils and staff the ideas and to get valid opinions back.

Travel Plan:

We discussed whether it was worth completing the travel plan or not.  We came to the decision it was as there have been 3 near misses recently, and doing so may help us get traffic lights near Tesco.

PTA Community Prize:

We were all asked if we knew of anyone that deserved to be awarded the prize. If we did we were told to tell Mr Wait and it would be taken from there.

They’d attend the award ceremony, if worthy and get the prize for their contribution to the community.

Specific Roles:

We as a council decided that we should all have specific roles to help us to be organised better. This was split into two sections; Publicity and Events.

Roles as followed:

Publicity:

Speakers: Max, Sam, Luke and Calypso.

Media: Tim and Luke

Publicity Managers: Jess and Georgia

Events:

Manager: Jason

Ass Manager: Shannon

Events ‘people’: Luke, Callum H, Shannon, Jason, Liam, Ollie and Jack

School Council Meeting - Tuesday 3 November 2010

Possible changes to the school uniform

A Sixth Former showed us his designs for the new uniform and the whole council agreed on the change apart from the change in logo, one idea was to have a competition between the students to change the logo. We also decided that we would keep plain trousers as pin-striped trousers would be too expensive and hard to find.  The next step is to get a survey out to students to get their ideas and thoughts also get samples made up.

Battle of the Bands 25th March 2011[Hopefully]

Year 11s spoke to us about them organising battle of the bands next year.  A relative is in a band and can perform as a guest band at the event and have a set time that they will perform at. The council would help sell tickets.

Zebra crossing idea for Rodway Hill area.

Chris Williams is going to email Chris Skidmore MP about the zebra crossing. Mr Seagrave also informed us that there may be a public consultation on this matter.

Non-school uniform day

We spoke briefly about running a fund raising event at the next school uniform day and came up with the idea of having the option to wear a costume and the craziest costume would get a prize, also the idea came up we have a raffle as this made a lot of profit in the school's version of the Apprentice. Speak to year council for other ideas.

UKYP elections

Two members of the school council put their names down to be part of the election.

Recent Activites - 13 October 2010

  • The School Council  in the last year has helped with the successful campaign against planning permission to build on Bryant's Field, assisted with changes in school uniform and organised a sponsored cycle ride from Bristol to Loughborough in aid of Leukaemia Research.
  • They have helped organise various fundraising events like Battle of the Bands, the Sponsored Walk and the Balloon Race , and they were part of the selection process for the recent Deputy Head interviews.
  • Students from the council regularly stand for UKYP [United Kingdom Youth Parliament] and have been successful both locally and nationally.

School Council Meeting - Tuesday 5 October 2010

Mr Bristow to take on the sponsored walk?

Mr Bristow and Mr Gregg have decided to do the sponsored walk together in 2011.

Possible changes to the school uniform

A Sixth Former spoke briefly about the possible changes to the school uniform and will show a presentation next meeting. If we want to change the uniform for next year we have to start now.

Zebra crossing idea for Rodway Hill area.

A Sixth Former is going to email Chris Skidmore MP about the zebra crossing.

Which charities we are supporting?

For Term 2 we are supporting Help for Heroes and Clic and for term 4 we are supporting Comic Relief and UNICEF.

Anti-bullying week.

The Council decided not to run a special week this year as Anti-bullying is running all the time, any ideas of what we could do instead would be helpful.

School Council Meeting - Tuesday 7 September

  • Mr Bristow will organise the sponsored walk and run as Mr Gregg has now left the school. The council would like the sponsored run and walk to keep going as they believe it raises a good amount of money for a worthwhile cause. They do however think that there needs to be more advertisement around the school and more notice so people are fully aware of the reasons behind the walk and can collect as many sponsors as possible. The School Council will email Mr Bristow on this matter.
  • A few of the year 12s have designed a new uniform for Mangotsfield School. They believe that it will look smarter and people are more likely to wear it.  They also believe it will work out cheaper for parents. It consists of: white blouse/shirt, black jumper/cardigan with Mangotsfield logo, black trousers and tie. The Yr12s are planning on presenting this to the School Council soon and then to people that have to authorise the change to uniform. It will be discussed by the school council at a later date.
  • It was suggested that the School Council should try and have a new Zebra Crossing put in place by the teachers’ car parks. Although this will be a long and tiresome process the Council is willing to campaign for it, and will look into asking Chris Skidmore to help.
  • Members again raised the idea of a team building activities day for the School Council, so the members got to know one another. This met with a mixed response.
  • It was brought up that as the school council they should get a fair amount of money to spend on what they want to make the students’ days more enjoyable. It was then suggested that there were more fun things to do at lunch time, various ideas were suggested including a gym and a skate park. The Council accepted that some of the ideas would not be possible, but some could and they will discuss these again.

Date of next meeting: October 5 2010, period 4.
